How do I enroll?

Enrolling in Medicare can be done over the phone, in person, or online. It’s important to note that enrollment is only possible during specific periods.

Common Enrollment Periods:

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)

This enrollment period is if you are new to Medicare.

  • Enrollment begins as early as three months before your 65th birthday
  • This period ends three months after your 65th birthday
  • This is the recommended enrollment period if enrolling for the first time

General Enrollment
Period (GEP)

This enrollment period is if you miss your Initial Enrollment period.

  • Enrollment begins January 1st of each year
  • Enrollment ends on March 31 of each year

For MA OEP

During this time, people who are already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan can make changes to their existing plan or disenroll from their current plan and return to Original Medicare. It runs from January 1st to March 31.

Special Enrollment Period (SEP)

This enrollment period is if you delay your Initial Enrollment or make plan changes.

The enrollment period varies. You can only adjust your coverage if certain events occur, such as:

  • If you change your home address
  • If you lose your current coverage
  • If you get other coverage
  • Your plan changes its contract with Medicare
  • Other special situations

Annual Enrollment
Period (AEP)

This enrollment period is to review and/or make changes to your coverage.

  • Enrollment begins October 15 of each year
  • Enrollment ends on December 7 of each year

During this time, people who are already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan can make changes to their plan, such as:

  • Switching to one Medicare Advantage plan to another
  • Dropping their Medicare Advantage plan and returning to Original Medicare
  • Adding a Medicare Part D (prescription drug) plan
