Medicare Advantage
Medicare Advantage is a privatized Medicare-approved health plan. It provides an alternative to Original Medicare by covering most of your Part A and Part B benefits and typically includes drug coverage (Part D) as well.
What does Medicare Advantage cover?
Also known as Medicare Part C, Medicare Advantage offers the same coverage as Part A and Part B and typically includes drug coverage (Part D) as well. It is a type of health plan approved by Medicare and offered by private companies that will cover most of your benefits, unlike Original Medicare which is a fee-for-service health insurance program where you typically pay for a portion of the costs for covered services as you get them.
Here’s the difference:
Original Medicare
· You pay for services as you receive them. When you obtain a covered service, Medicare covers a portion of the cost, and you are responsible for paying your share.
· You can visit any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that accepts Medicare.
Includes:
Part A (Hospital Insurance) |
|
Part B (Medical Insurance) |
Can be added:
Part D (Medicare Drug Coverage) |
|
Medicare Supplement |

Medicare Advantage
(Part C)
· You enroll in a Medicare-approved plan from a private company that provides an alternative to Original Medicare for both health and drug coverage.
· In many cases, you can only use doctors who are in the plan’s network.
Includes:
Part A (Hospital Insurance) |
|
Part B (Medical Insurance) |
Can be added:
Part D (Medicare Drug Coverage) |
Some extra benefits include:
Certain vision, hearing, and dental services |
You must have both Part A and Part B to join a Medicare Advantage Plan.

Types of Medicare Advantage Plans
HMO Plans
HMO is short for Health Maintenance Organization. HMO plans are generally less expensive than other Medicare Advantage plans. They require members to use in-network providers and select a primary care physician.
PPO Plans
PPO is short for Preferred Provider Organization. PPO plans provide greater flexibility, allowing you to use out-of-network providers, but at a higher cost. Members are not required to choose a primary care physician or obtain referrals to see specialists.
Special Needs Plan
Special Needs Plan is also known as SNPs. SNPs are designed for individuals who are dual-eligible for Medicare and Medicaid (D-SNP), have chronic or disabling conditions (C-SNP), or reside in an institution (I-SNP).
